GREENVILLE’S BEST HALLOWEEN TRADITION, WHAT SCARES YOU?  PRESENTED BY DANCE THEATRE OF GREENVILLE

Greenville’s most innovative pre-professional dance company, Dance Theatre of Greenville, will present What Scares You? a full-length Halloween inspired ballet, on October 1 at 8pm and October 2 at 2pm at the Peace Center Gunter Theatre.  Created by the company’s Artistic Director, Sandra Miller, this unique offering differentiates the company from the usual fall and winter fare of Dracula, Thriller and Nutcracker and has become a fun family friendly tradition in Greenville.  The story centers on Emmaline’s nighttime adventure through the dreamscapes and terrors that haunt us all.  Snuggled securely in her bedroom with her beloved doll companions, Emmaline prepares for her nightly trip to slumberland.  Despite the security of all that is known to her, she senses a foreboding presence that fills her with apprehension and fear.  As is true for all of us, the anticipation of sleep can conjure the dread of what scares you.

As sleep over takes her, Emmaline is visited by a terrifying parade of her deepest fears.  Witches plot to cook her doll companions that have come to life, and under the bed monsters with eerily glowing multiple eyes, tango with the scheming cooks.  Sirens that have called sailors to their deaths upon rocky shores escape from the closet, and clowns overtake her bedroom.  Ravens and bats land from flight and descend the unending staircase to lure Emmaline to attempt to fly, and the lady in the lake that perished the night of her prom and visits the parked cars of prom dates, floats past.  Snakes slither about and machete wielding, blood thirsty vampires hypnotize their next victim.  Zombies arise from the grave and ether bound spirits lure the innocent girl to a horrifying fate at the edge of a razor sharp pendulum.  But as dawn beaks, Emmaline is unsure of the reality of her nightmare.  As she watches the chandelier swing, she questions was it real or imagined…..you decide.

A cast of some of the areas most talented dancers will bring the story to life. Several of the Dance Theatre of Greenville members have attended some of the country’s most prestigious pre professional programs such as American Ballet Theatre (NYC), Houston Ballet and Boston Ballet.  Artistic Director, Sandra Miller, was a principal dancer with the Fort Worth Ballet (now Texas Ballet Theatre), has trained at the schools of the Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Washington Ballet, American Ballet Theatre® and David Howard.  She is one of two American Ballet Theatre® National Training Curriculum Certified Teachers in South Carolina, has a BFA and MBA from Texas Christian University and has nearly 25 years of experience teaching and directing dancers in the Carolinas.

Come experience this exciting family friendly Halloween tradition at the Peace Center Gunter Theatre.  What Scares You?  has something for every age and will satisfy the audience with a full scale, richly textured, musically intriguing and expertly danced story.   Meet the characters that scare Emmaline after the shows at a “Trick or Treat Meet and Greet” in the Gunter Theatre lobby…..come discover What Scares You?

NYC and Dance Teacher Summit Recap

Two of our teachers, Katie and Katie, recently packed their bags and headed to NYC for the annual Dance Teacher Summit.  The Dance Teacher Summit is a three day convention where dance teachers from all over the U.S. come to participate in movement classes, workshops, and business seminars, led by some of the most well known teachers and choreographers in the business.

We had the opportunity to take class with Mia Michaels, Mandy Moore, Doug Caldwell, Ray Leeper, Al Blackstone, and many more.

Miss Katie even got to meet one of her favorite dancers, Dusty Button.

On our second night in NYC we were able to score tickets to Radio City Music Hall to see the Rockette's New York Spectacular and to beat all, our seats were in the 4th row. One word, AMAZING!!!  Mia Michaels, choreographer on SYTYCD and teacher at the summit, actually choreographed the New York Spectacular and we had the opportunity to learn a portion from the show at the summit.

Our last night in NYC was spent at The Capezio A.C.E Awards.  This is a very special event where upcoming choreographers present their work to hopefully win a scholarship to put on their own show in NYC.  The winner of this year's show was Martha Nichols, also a contestant on a past season of SYTYCD.

That brings us to the end of our trip.  We had a great time and gathered up as much information as we could to bring back to share with our students in the fall.  Fall classes start, August 29th! Registration is still open so contact the studio today to find the perfect class.  We are excited to get a new season started and see all of our smiling dancers!
